An Aussie author responds to his critics...

...IN Heaven and Earth - Global Warming: The Missing Science, I predicted that the critics would play the man and not discuss the science. Initial criticism appeared before the book was released three weeks ago.Well-known climatastrophists criticised the book before they actually received a review copy. Critics, who have everything to gain by frightening us witless with politicised science, have now shown their true colours. No critic has argued science with me. I have just enjoyed a fortnight of being thrashed with a feather...Robert Manne (The Weekend Australian, Inquirer, April 25-26) claims to be a great democrat yet demonises dissent on a matter of science. He is not a scientist. The gains made in the Enlightenment, the scientific method, history and integrated interdisciplinary science are all ignored in an ideological push to remodel the economy...The huge number of recent letters tell me that there are winds of change. The average punter has been told for more than two decades that we are all going to fry. He is not stupid and is blessed with a rare commodity missing in many academic circles: common sense... My correspondents feel helpless and disenfranchised with the unending negative moralistic cacophony about climate change. They know it smells but they cannot find where the smell comes from. The reason why the book has been a publishing sensation is because the average person knows that they are being conned and finally they have a source reference...The hypothesis tested in my book was that increased atmospheric CO2 creates global warming. This was shown to be invalid on all time scales and by a diversity of methods. In the past, climate change has never been driven by CO2. Why should it be now driven by CO2 when the atmospheric CO2 content is low? ...read the full riposte from Ian Plimer in the Australian, here...Ian Plimer, a professor at the University of Adelaide, is author of Heaven and Earth - Global Warming: The Missing Science (Connor Court)...
...consider the case of Professor Ian Plimer and the book he couldn't sell.
Well, couldn't sell until now, because Plimer's Heaven and Earth, debunking the great global warming scare, has become an instant best-seller. It today gets its fourth reprint in little over a fortnight, bringing to 25,000 the number of copies now sold or ordered.
This, in a country where a best-seller is reckoned at some 8000 copies, so we're talking about a publishing hit
...more here...

...and here in NZ, Ian Wishart's "Air Con" has shot to the top of non-fiction book sales. There is obviously a hunger to know where the stench of BS comes from...

Yes. Anthropogenic global warming is a big con. Al Gore has made $100 million off this scam. The ride is about over. How many years can you continue to ignore the fact Earth it has bee cooling since 1998.

I think it is a very high stakes game for the international left, one that they can't afford to lose. To their horror though, it looks like the general public are seeing through and past the scam.

Nice to hear back from you !

Climate science is not science. It wasn't a science 400 years ago, or 100 or even 30 years ago pre-Kyoto and pre-AGM and pre-IPCC, and it doesn't fit the current dictionary definition of a science, which is "the observation, identification, description, experimental investigation and theoretical explanation of natural phenomena." Climate science concerns itself only with anthropogenic factors, i.e. man-caused phenomena, so falls outside the definition. Plimer is a real time scientist and not part of the new breed of politically directed UN-policy graduates who choose a route that is more aligned to research-funding and population control, further to taxation agendae, than to discovery. No argument of theirs should ever be stacked against someone like Plimer.

Thanks Miranda.
I think if any good is likely to come from this political AGW crusade, it may well be to further our knowledge of climatology, so that it/we become more "scintific".

The ongoing ARGO experiments, the recently begun CLOUD experiments at CERN (part of the Hadron collider project) will add to our knowledge, and remove unknowns about climate.

I,too, don't "believe" in anthropogenic global warming. But we need to be careful. If we say that "climate science is not science", we won't be in a position to claim the validity of those testing methods, and their results, which will almost certainly show that Goreism has been a con. And plenty of people on the "right" - an old-fashioned taxonomy we should abandon - have embraced AGW very keenly.

Anonymous has a point. Perhaps it's better to attack bad or corrupt science and to emphasise that corruption.
(Word verification 'pigrat'!)

Why pussyfoot around? Climate scientists are liars and frauds. Why should the taxpayer fund their meal tickets? There is not one climate scientist who is prepared to say AGW is a myth because it would invalidate their degree. There is not one who can point to a shred of provable evidence that the climate is changing due to man. Therefore in my book they are parasites and a drain on the economy.

"Climate scientists are liars and frauds. Why should the taxpayer fund their meal tickets?"

This statement highlights your incredible ignorance. You do realise that scientists are people just like you and me dont you? Not all scientists recieve funding from companies with vested interests and even if they did, false hypothesis in science never last long as science is constantly trying to 'Disprove' its own hypothesis. Thats what science is. Science does not PROVE anything it merely disproves Hypothesis.

"There is not one climate scientist who is prepared to say AGW is a myth because it would invalidate their degree."

there is not one scientist prepared to say this because he knows that if he does he will destroying any reputation he has as a scientist. Of course though he could always write a book and make a pretty penny in the process.

Why are you guys so quick to question the motives of scientists? Why dont you question the motives of the people selling you this crap aswell?

"There is not one who can point to a shred of provable evidence that the climate is changing due to man."

As above, science doesnt prove anything.

"Therefore in my book they are parasites and a drain on the economy."

Again, as above. I ask you to honestly question the motives of the people pushing this controversy, and ask yourself who really are the parasites

The fact that the green/left have always played on fear and overstatement gives a credibility problem to any cause they wish to follow. Al Gore's politics and his movie is a case in point.

With ongoing knowledge of the earth's temperature and climate mechanisms now and in the past, it's becoming increasingly evident that we have nothing to fear from global warming/climate change. More and more lay people and scientists are reaching the same conclusion...

Says it all doesn't it.

"The huge number of recent letters tell me that there are winds of change. The average punter has been told for more than two decades that we are all going to fry."

And before that we were all going to freeze, starve and exhaust ourselves into extinction. Not only do we have common sense, it's just plain obvious if only the fools would open their eyes or in this case, feel the cold.

There is always a crisis available to suit every taste isn't there. Warming, cooling, bird flu, swine flu. Fizzers, the lot of them...
