SPIKED...right on the nail...

...while the left attempt to reclaim scientific legitimacy after the Climategate expose, and while they agonise over their failure to achieve victory in Copenhagen, commentators are relishing the passions of the conflict, and attempting to predict the way ahead. At the start of 2010 Ben Pile, writing in Spiked, adds his analysis...

...Copenhagen’s failure is the culmination of long-standing political incoherence. The government, opposition parties, special climate committees, NGOs, and activists, far from being united by their desire to save the world, only managed to deepen their differences. The government and its opposition use environmental crisis to rescue themselves from their own crisis of legitimacy. The institutions they create only serve to increase the distance between them, the public and the protesters. Sparse protest movements attract attention through absurd stunts, rather than by demonstrating their weight of numbers, further isolating themselves. One-time development NGOs abandon the notion of progress, to concentrate on mere ‘sustainability’, and through ill-conceived ideas such as ‘environmental justice’ and ‘climate poverty’, turn their campaigns against development itself...
The climate change camp cannot even agree on the reason for failure. Miliband and Brown accused China of derailing Copenhagen...Prescott chose to blame the USA, while complaining about climate activist Mark Lynas’ blaming China. As per usual Lynas’s comrade, George Monbiot, laid the blame squarely at the feet of Barack Obama, who was too busy representing ‘vested interests’ to save the planet...It was neither China nor the USA, said Martin Kohr, journalist and development economist; it was Denmark. The ‘Danish Text’ had proposed privileging industrialised countries over the developing world, causing the group representing them to walk out of the conference.
It seems that championing the climate cause precludes self-reflection. The climate crisis is but a proxy object for a much deeper crisis experienced by today’s politicians, who respond by seeking legitimacy through the environmental agenda. Defunct moral compasses point North towards melting ice caps and South towards ‘climate poverty’. But the crisis exists at home. Vacuity drives environmentalism’s ascendency, and the ever increasing incoherence of environmental politics has driven the search for authority beyond borders and above democratic politics and toward supranational institutions. The coming together of all those gripped by such crises in Copenhagen was a clumsy and blind attempt to turn disunity into something cohesive, and to turn aimlessness into direction. No wonder it failed; it was dead before it was even conceived...more here...

What progressive really means to red greens...

...is progress towards socialism. Never mind that any move towards green left utopia is to turn the clock backwards. It's worth noting again that the green anti-capitalist left, who claim a copyright on the words progressive and caring are the group most prepared to resist real progress and work hard to condemn our most vulnerable and poor global citzens to ongoing poverty. This from Tim Wilson, director of the climate and trade unit at the institute of public affairs, (hardly a rabid right winger) who observes with weary resignation; It's the poor who will pay for the Copenhagen circus...blogging from Copenhagen...

...MORE people attend UN conferences than make a meaningful contribution, but even by UN standards delegates are describing the Copenhagen climate conference as a circus. Twenty-odd thousand green activists predominantly from developed countries are overwhelming the 8000 government officials and demanding meetings with delegations so they can push their proposals into any final agreement.
A handful of green, anti-capitalist activists has even infiltrated official negotiations and are representing countries in some negotiating stream...A motley crew of negotiators representing Bangladesh, Bolivia, Ghana and India have put into technology transfer negotiating texts the scrapping of intellectual property rights necessary to attract private investment in the development of climate-friendly technologies that are needed to cut emissions...The irony is that if there were as many people who cared about cutting poverty, the world's poor would be better able to adapt to the consequences of climate change and there'd also be the economic resources to cut emissions and deliver a binding agreement at Copenhagen
...more here...
How to explain this persistent and transparent hypocrisy ? Only by appreciating that for the green left this is their last roll of the dice. As I have commented before, this argument defines their cause, and loss of the argument condemns them to total and permanent political irrelevancy.

Greens and global warming on trial...

From The LA Times...The nation's largest business lobby wants to put the science of global warming on trial. The U.S. Chamber of Commerce, trying to ward off potentially sweeping federal emissions regulations, is pushing the Environmental Protection Agency to hold a rare public hearing on the scientific evidence for man-made climate change.Chamber officials say it would be "the Scopes monkey trial of the 21st century" complete with witnesses, cross-examinations and a judge who would rule, essentially, on whether humans are warming the planet to dangerous effect."It would be evolution versus creationism," said William Kovacs, the chamber's senior vice president for environment, technology and regulatory affairs. "It would be the science of climate change on trial."...
Well no, Mr Kovacs. The Scopes trial was over an issue involving morality, racism and religion. This debate is purely scientific. It would be a definitive forum where the watching general public could view and listen to the competing arguments over the defining issues of our times. Bring it on...
...Exciting news ! More here... and from WuWT...
